Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Commons Codec 1.12 based on RC2

Bruno P. Kinoshita-3
Hi Rob, thanks for RM'ing it.

Had some time before a meeting and left a terminal window building with `mvn clean test site -e -X`... after almost 30 minutes came back, and in top/htop saw a java running jacoco report.

Then had a look at .travis.yml, and tried simply running `mvn`. But after 10 minutes it was still showing

[INFO] Running org.apache.commons.codec.digest.Sha512CryptTest

So had to CTRL+C and start preparing for the meeting. Will try building it again later today or maybe during the weekend. Sorry.

Cheers
Bruno

Testing RC from the git tag.

Apache RAT check OK.
Apache CLIRR check OK.

Running 'mvn -V clean package site' using Oracle Java 8 and 11 on Windows
10.0.16299.904:

Apache Maven 3.6.0 (97c98ec64a1fdfee7767ce5ffb20918da4f719f3;
2018-10-24T14:41:47-04:00)
Maven home: C:\Java\apache-maven-3.6.0\bin\..
Java version: 1.8.0_202, vendor: Oracle Corporation, runtime: C:\Program
Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_202\jre
Default locale: en_US, platform encoding: Cp1252
OS name: "windows 10", version: "10.0", arch: "amd64", family: "windows"

Apache Maven 3.6.0 (97c98ec64a1fdfee7767ce5ffb20918da4f719f3;
2018-10-24T14:41:47-04:00)
Maven home: C:\Java\apache-maven-3.6.0\bin\..
Java version: 11.0.2, vendor: Oracle Corporation, runtime: C:\Program
Files\Java\jdk-11.0.2
Default locale: en_US, platform encoding: Cp1252
OS name: "windows 10", version: "10.0", arch: "amd64", family: "windows"

BUT on Ubuntu in a VirtualBox VM running 'mvn clean test'

Apache Maven 3.5.2
Maven home: /usr/share/maven
Java version: 1.8.0_191, vendor: Oracle Corporation
Java home: /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre
Default locale: en_US, platform encoding: UTF-8
OS name: "linux", version: "4.15.0-45-generic", arch: "amd64", family:
"unix"

[INFO] Running org.apache.commons.codec.digest.Sha256CryptTest

Never seems to come back.

I tried to deactivate Jacoco like this: 'mvn clean test -P-jacoco'

But it still hangs.

Running the test by itself also hangs: 'mvn clean test -P-jacoco
-Dtest=org.apache.commons.codec.digest.Sha256CryptTest'

Since Bruno reported problems with the 512 version of this test, I ran 'mvn
clean test -P-jacoco -Dtest=org.apache.commons.codec.digest.Sha512CryptTest'

And that hangs as well.

I thought Surefire might be bonky so I tried an older version: 'mvn clean
test -P-jacoco -Dtest=Sha512CryptTest -Dcommons.surefire.version=2.19'

Same result. The latest Surefire: 'mvn clean test -P-jacoco
-Dtest=Sha512CryptTest -Dcommons.surefire.version=3.0.0-M3'

Same hang.

What is going on here?

Gary

$ java -version
openjdk version "10.0.1" 2018-04-17
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 10.0.1+10-Debian-4)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0.1+10-Debian-4, mixed mode)

Works also with Java 9.

With Java 8, Surefire plugin crashes (workaround required in the POM,
IIRC related the "class loader").

mvn test works OK for me on Java7, Java8, Java9 (macOS)
Takes around 25 seconds.

Since the code is supposed to be buildable on Java8 (and Java7) I
think the pom needs to be fixed before release.
Or at least the Release Notes need to tell people how to fix the pom.

These work:

Maven home: /usr/share/maven
Java version: 1.8.0_191, vendor: Oracle Corporation
Java home: /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre
Default locale: en_US, platform encoding: UTF-8
OS name: "linux", version: "4.15.0-45-generic", arch: "amd64", family:
"unix"

- mvn test -P-jacoco -Dtest=Sha512CryptTest#ttestSha256LargetThanBlocksize
- mvn test -P-jacoco -Dtest=Sha512CryptTest#testSha2CryptRounds
- mvn test -P-jacoco -Dtest=Sha512CryptTest#testSha2CryptWrongSalt
- mvn test -P-jacoco -Dtest=Sha512CryptTest#testSha512CryptBytes
- mvn test -P-jacoco
-Dtest=Sha512CryptTest#testSha512CryptExplicitCallThreadLocalRandom
- mvn test -P-jacoco -Dtest=Sha512CryptTest#testSha512CryptStrings
- mvn test -P-jacoco -Dtest=testSha512CryptWithEmptySalt

These hang:

- mvn test -P-jacoco -Dtest=Sha512CryptTest#testSha512CryptExplicitCall
- mvn test -P-jacoco -Dtest=Sha512CryptTest#testSha512CryptNullData

Rob Tompkins
Strange, I suppose we should cancel and try to debug it?

in org.apache.commons.codec.digest.Sha2Crypt.sha2Crypt(byte[], String,

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Commons Codec 1.12 based on RC2

sebb-2-2
It builds fine on ubuntu trusty with Java8

https://builds.apache.org/view/A-D/view/Commons/job/Commons-Codec-Adhoc/

Maybe sprinkle the Sha2Crypt.sha2Crypt method with debug prints to see
where the code is hanging?

Or can you run the test in an IDE that allows you to interrupt it if it hangs?

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Commons Codec 1.12 based on RC2

Bruno P. Kinoshita-2
Hi,

Had a bit of spare time to investigate this one (almost end of Friday for me anyway, hooray!).

There are two unit tests in Sha512 hanging for me in Eclipse, testSha512CryptExplicitCall and testSha512CryptNullData. The code that the test uses and hangs in my JVM can be simplified to:

```
String salt = B64.getRandomSalt(8);
System.out.println(salt); // never seen
```

Looking at B64, we have this: `SecureRandom.getInstanceStrong()`, which is the random object. Used to randomly pick a letter of the B64 alphabet.

It appears this one may take a long time in some systems due to low entropy. i.e. it tries to gather more random data to give you a really strong random... only that it appears to take a long long time for my JVM.

Cheers
Bruno

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Commons Codec 1.12 based on RC2

Bruno P. Kinoshita-2
 Hi Gilles,
Sorry, forgot to mention I was talking about the code in the tag for the release.

The random is created here

https://github.com/apache/commons-codec/blob/1884dc028bce8094e8ddd7a9fc192a107a64527a/src/main/java/org/apache/commons/codec/digest/B64.java#L77
And used here
https://github.com/apache/commons-codec/blob/commons-codec-1.12-RC2/src/main/java/org/apache/commons/codec/digest/Sha2Crypt.java#L113
This last one is called from one of the unit tests within that Sha512Test class that was mentioned in the previous e-mails.
I simplified the code while debugging in Eclipse, but probably omitted too much of it. Sorry.
CheersBruno

The link which I provided is also supposed to be the
code-to-be-released (branch "1_12").
Incriminated code does not appear there.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Commons Codec 1.12 based on RC2

Bruno P. Kinoshita-2
Ah, good point. If you prefer to use the gitbox interface, it's available here too.

https://gitbox.apache.org/repos/asf?p=commons-codec.git;a=blob;f=src/main/java/org/apache/commons/codec/digest/B64.java;h=4396eccbb80211643403419b22715b033015e452;hb=1884dc028bce8094e8ddd7a9fc192a107a64527a#l77

The branch from which the tag was created, I think, is in other repository, and will be pushed/merged during the next steps of the release.

Cheers
Bruno

The link which I provided is also supposed to be the
code-to-be-released (branch "1_12").
Incriminated code does not appear there.
